HFTP Builds Educational Campaign Ahead of GDPR Compliance Requirements

17 November 2017
With just over six months until the new EU General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR) are in effect, Hospitality Financial and Technology Professionals (HFTP) is ramping up its education campaign to prepare the hospitality industry for compliance. The association initiated this drive last spring with the formation of the HFTP Hospitality Data Protection Officer (DPO) Task Force, a team of 23 experts developing compliance guidelines and resources specific to hospitality, including defining the role of the hospitality DPO. As part of its initiative, HFTP has created an education program to build awareness and educate hospitality companies on the steps needed to take leading up to the May 25, 2018 compliance deadline. Available free to the industry are a variety of resources, including a webinar on Monday, November 20, "Hospitality Faces GDPR -- How HFTP Can Help."HFTP Chief Operations Officer and Task Force Member Lucinda Hart, CAE, MBA, explained why this initiative is integral to the association's strategic goals. "The GDPR is greatly impacting the hospitality industry," said Hart. "The dedication that HFTP and our members have committed to industry awareness demonstrates HFTP's commitment to assisting our stakeholders in finding solutions to their challenges more efficiently than any organization."The upcoming webinar reviews key requirements to GDPR, and what it means for the hospitality industry. Topics to be covered include the main issues and challenges that hospitality faces, and a sample job description for a hospitality data protection officer - a position required by the GDPR. The presentation will be given by two HFTP Hospitality DPO Task Force members: Alvaro Hidalgo, task force chair and managing partner of FIRST LOGIC consulting and Carl Weldon, FIH FHOSPA, HFTP COO, Europe. The interactive, webinar will be Monday, November 20, 2017 from 10:45-11:45 a.m. CET (9:45-10:45 a.m. GMT), when the two presenters are live and available to respond to participants' questions. An archived recording will be available afterwards. Registration is now available on the HFTP website. The webinar is one of a several GDPR educational events from HFTP. Live presentations include the recent, standing-room only presentation on the same topic from Hidalgo and Weldon in London at HOSPACE 2017 on November 2 - the Hospitality Finance, Revenue and IT Professionals' (HOSPA) Annual Conference and Exhibition. Also, task force member Daniel Johnson, partner and co-founder at VENZA Inc., gave a similar informational presentation at the HFTP Annual Convention on October 27 in Championsgate, Florida USA. Also, to a broader audience, Hart spoke on the topic with Jon Albano for a Lodging Leaders podcast. Looking ahead, HFTP will be developing a webinar geared to suppliers. The HFTP Hospitality DPO Task Force is in the process of developing material to reference, free to the industry. Just published is an article written by Hidalgo, "Personal Data, Privacy and Identity", in the Hotel Yearbook 2018: Technology. The task force is also in the final stages of creating a definitive job description for the hospitality DPO. These resources are collected in a repository on the HFTP website. To find the latest materials, and information from HFTP on GDPR as well as any upcoming educational events, visit the task force page on the HFTP website.About HFTP Hospitality Financial and Technology Professionals (HFTP) established in 1952, is an international, nonprofit association, headquartered in Austin, Texas, USA, with offices in Hong Kong, United Kingdom and the Netherlands. 16 November 2017
The leaders of Hospitality Financial and Technology Professionals (HFTP) used its inaugural HITEC Dubai to announce an extensive global research project today that will provide guidance on the state of the industry; provide existing industry stakeholders with additional resources, and enrich the association's understanding of financial and technology trends that will shape the industry's future."HFTP has just celebrated its 65th anniversary as a not for profit association, and our leadership intends to offer this foundation and provide a platform for the industry to build upon," said Frank Wolfe, HFTP CEO. "HFTP is in a decisive position where it seeks to develop the resources and benefits that best serve the current and future industry. HFTP continues to hear from its stakeholders that as the steward of finance and technology in hospitality, there is an opportunity to optimize the resources being provided to the industry."The survey will measure the value that stakeholders are receiving from the industry today and seek feedback on areas of professional development, research and resources that are unfulfilled within the hospitality finance and technology arena. Currently in development, the survey will be distributed the first week of December industry wide."Participation from a large sample of HFTP's stakeholders in this survey is imperative to help the association draw a representative picture of industry professionals," said Wolfe. "HFTP, a nonprofit association, serves to provide resources that benefit the industry, and survey responses are going to guide the association to serve those needs."Upon the completion of the survey, a complete analysis of the data will be completed by Forrester's expert consultants. These will serve as guidance for the HFTP Global Board to make key strategic decisions for the association. Forrester is one of the most influential research and advisory firms in the world. Does Flexible Working Lead to Better Productivity?

14 November 2017
Love it or hate it, I am pretty sure you have heard of the concept of “flexible working.” Ever since people first realized they do not have to work like a machine, screwing in everything that is shaped like a hexagon much like in the Charlie Chaplin movie “Modern Times,” the fight for a better work arrangement has been nonstop. Especially in recent decades, the astonishing advance of technology has opened up the door to a new world where employees have some say over when, where and how they work. Flexible working comes in numerous forms, including part-time work, remote work and reduced hours.

Harnessing technology for a competitive advantage

13 November 2017
The role of the hotel IT manager is evolving, writes Neil Foster. Today he or she is as an internal consultant and educator who makes sense of the "noise", a connector who seeks to understand the needs of the people and processes involved. Central to the hotel operation in terms of influence, the new role is more business analyst operating at the forefront, less technician working behind the scenes.

How to Write a Good Job Description

9 November 2017
Remember when Rupert Holmes asked the famous musical question, “Do you like piña coladas, and getting caught in the rain?” The songwriter was trying to attract the right kind of person with the tone of their personal ad. The same idea holds true when you are writing a job description for your company. You want to attract the right kind of person to your company and give them a reasonable idea of what to expect from the job. With the high cost of attracting and retaining top talent, a good job description for managerial positions is not only the first step in the recruiting process, but an important tool in retaining the talent you have within your organization. A good management job description will give your team members goals to strive for and help them accept new managers.

HFTP Helps Contributes Sizeable Donation to Camp Boggy Creek

6 November 2017
Less than two weeks ago, HFTP and its stakeholders came together for HFTP Helps to raise $9,500 for the life-changing organization Camp Boggy Creek. This was done as part of the HFTP Helps program, now in its third year, which puts focus on a charity in the surrounding area of the HFTP Annual Convention host city. The 2017 HFTP Annual Convention was October 25-29 at the Omni Orlando Resort, Championsgate (Orlando, Florida area), in the vicinity of Camp Boggy Creek.

Commitment to Success

3 November 2017
When reflecting upon this year’s HFTP Annual Convention, it occurs to me that all the professionals I met had a high level of commitment to furthering their careers and professions. Executing an event for discerning professionals isn’t an easy task, but one that was expertly delivered by our association.
