I have had the pleasure of a front row seat at a very special panel discussion. The hospitality industry’s top tech executives got together at HITEC Amsterdam today to discuss artificial intelligence (AI) and voice recognition. The challenge: to make sense of all of the changes happening in information technology and articulate value-adding solutions for the hospitality industry. How do we turn a land of confusion into a land of opportunity? The panelists had a few secrets to share.

A study found that Americans check their phone on average once every 12 minutes. That number may not be accurate for everyone, but you have to admit that the separation anxiety is real — and people have grown dependent on their mobile phones. The hospitality industry, though not always at the forefront of technological innovation, has also recognized the potential of mobile technology.

I had the privilege last week of attending the 12th annual HFTP Mid-South Atlantic Regional Conference (MSARC) in Greenville, South Carolina. This is an annual regional conference that is put on by the HFTP Central Carolina, Charlotte-Blue Ridge, South Carolina and Central Virginia chapters, switching locations every year between each region. This was my second MSARC to attend, and it proved to be just as special as last year’s event in Raleigh, North Carolina. Greenville was a great setting for the conference and the Westin Poinsett a wonderful host for our group

On May 19-20, 2017, the HFTP North Texas Chapter hosted the 2017 HFTP Texas Regional Conference which brought together a mix of hospitality finance and technology professionals at the Embassy Suites Dallas Love Field in Dallas, Texas USA. Attendees came from across the state of Texas – as well as neighboring states – for a two-day, education-packed conference. On Friday morning, pre-conference activities started with a CHAE review to assist attendees in preparing for taking the CHAE exam.

In June 2015, Hospitality Financial and Technology Professionals (HFTP®), debuted its Entrepreneur 20X (E20X) innovation pitch competition, designed for hospitality technology startups, for the first time at the Hospitality Industry Technology Exposition and Conference (HITEC®) – the world’s largest and oldest hospitality technology exposition and conference brand. Rapidly gaining popularity after its introduction at HITEC Austin, E20X has become a reoccurring feature at HITEC. In 2017, HFTP expanded E20X globally with its first European feature at HITEC Amsterdam in March and will be an upcoming feature at HITEC Toronto in June.

Have you ever wondered about the history of the Uniform System of Accounts for the Lodging Industry (USALI)? Recently an HFTP member contacted the HFTP Americas Research Center to research the history of the treatment of service charges in the uniform system for hotels. This sent me down a path of discovery and I found myself fascinated at the changes throughout the years. For example, the 5th edition of the Uniform System of Accounts for Hotels, printed in 1952, presents information pertaining to “service charges to guests for the purchase of railroad, airplane, steamship or other transportation tickets.”

So the day finally arrived: HITEC Amsterdam. After many strategy meetings and discussions about growing HFTP and HITEC, one of the industry’s most prominent shows, on March 29, 2017 HITEC Amsterdam kicked off to recording breaking attendance. How can one say it is record breaking when it is the inaugural event? Well, as a finance and technology group there are always goals and metrics established, and while forecasting is something we do well, we exceeded our expectations. Therefore, it was record breaking!

On Tuesday, March 28, 2017, HFTP’s hospitality start-up pitch competition Entrepreneur 20X (E20X) took place in Europe for the first time at HITEC Amsterdam. Each participant had four minutes to pitch their business concept, followed by four minutes for the expert judges panel to ask questions. I did notice that most of the start-ups were evolving around one (or more, in some cases) of three main hotelier-focused goals.

Please raise your hand if you are busy. We are all probably raising our hands. There are many things vying for your attention right now in your job. Deadlines for your hotel budget, getting new technology for your club, managing staff and did we say keeping up with your career?

The weather may be cool this coming week, but there will be lots of hot new products and warm-welcome networking opportunities at HITEC Amsterdam (#HITECams).

HFTP hosted its first membership event in London this month at the Rosewood Hotel London on Monday, March 6, 2017. The first welcome we received was from the hotel dog – called Pearl – so named as the building the hotel resides in used to be the Pearl Assurance Banking Hall – and very grand it is.

Written By: Fee Naaijkens. HITEC Amsterdam kicks off tomorrow on 28 March with its pre- conference events, and I am thrilled to be attending the event as a guest blogger this year. Amsterdam is going to be teeming with hospitality professionals from all over the world this week. But for a popular destination like “Mokum” (the locals’ nickname for their city), dealing with so many out-of-towners is a piece of cake. With the increasing number of hotel guests visiting the Dutch capital every year, running a hotel here should be all smooth sailing from now on, right? Not quite. There is something brewing that is about to shake up the hotel landscape across all of Europe.

I had the great honor of attending the HFTP® Mid-South Atlantic Regional Conference last month in Raleigh, North Carolina USA from February 23–25, 2017. This was my first regional conference, so I really did not know what to expect. Having attended many HFTP Annual Convention and HITEC® events over the years, I wondered how a regional conference would compare. It did not take long to find out.

A fortunate fact to begin with is that the hospitality industry across the world does not have oligarchic structures as, for instance, the car industry. Instead of a handful of a few large players, a mixture is in place, where several mid-size system gastronomy chains and thousands of individual restaurants represent a significant economic power with millions of jobs. In one of their presentations, Clipperton Finance, Europe’s leading independent investment bank fully focused on high growth technology companies, estimated that there are 800,000 restaurants across Europe that form one of the largest sub-digitized markets still in existence.

I recently attended and represented HFTP at the CMAA 90th World Conference on Club Management and Club Business Expo that took place from February 7–11, 2017 in Orlando, Florida USA. The event was held at the Orlando World Center Marriott – an amazing Orlando resort, just across the freeway of MouseTown, where each night magically comes to an end with a 9:00 p.m. firework show. With a perfect view from my 14th-floor balcony at my hotel, I enjoyed watching the firework performance nightly.

London was calling on Thanksgiving this year. So, instead of having turkey and trimmings, a hefty portion of education on emerging technologies, revenue management and live interviews with international industry experts were served at HOSPACE 2015, a one-day annual conference and exhibition hosted by HOSPA. HFTP as a sponsor organization was well-represented with HFTP Global Director Michael Levie of CitizenM as one of the spotlight interviews. While many sessions were specific to trends and issues being faced in the local U.K. market, there were also discussions on universal topics faced by all. As always, one of the highlights of any conference besides the educational components are the opportunities to network, share and discuss issues with other delegates and get their perspectives on new and old topics.

As I sat on my flight home from Dubai, I couldn’t help but reflect on the past few days: my experience in the Middle East, and the incredible size and scale of everything in Dubai. Things are growing there at a rate that I can’t begin to describe, and that, of course, means the hospitality industry is booming there as well. Dubai is home to the first 7-star hotel, the Burj Al Arab, which shuttles you from the airport in a helicopter and provides you a dedicated butler and personal in-suite chef, and the world’s tallest hotel: the JW Marriott Marquis. The sheer number of 4 and 5 star hotels there is staggering, and everywhere you look there are huge cranes working 24 hours a day on even more. There are currently 64,000 keys in Dubai, with 27,000 more coming in the next three years.
